从去年年底开始，英国乐队北极猴子（Arctic Monkeys）似乎就没有离开过媒体和歌迷的视线。2006年1月，Arctic Monkeys乐队的首张专辑《Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not》在英国一经发行便直冲英国专辑榜榜首，并连续四周统治英国专辑榜。本张专辑在英国发行当天便狂卖11万8千张，这一数字甚至超过当周英国专辑榜前20名中其他专辑的销量总和。此后，《Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not》很快便超越了前辈绿洲乐队（Oasis）1994年的首张专辑《Definitely Maybe》，成为英国流行音乐史上最热销的处女专辑。

　　从专辑名就可以看出，《Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not》是一张朋克感十足的专辑。“人们说我什么，我偏不是什么！”来自北极的猴子跟正常的猴子本来就不一样，本来就是异类。Arctic Monkeys在这张唱片中随心所欲的书写着他们的反叛，发泄着他们的愤怒与不满，无论对社会抑或是爱情。其实，Arctic Monkeys的这张专辑就是当今英国青年生活的写照，他们唱出了广大英国年轻一代的生活。从这点来说，如今它在英国能够引起轰动其实也完全是意料之中的事。在去年10月的第一首英国榜冠军单曲《I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor》中，Alex Turner唱道：“你在寻找浪漫还是寻找什么？我猜你在舞池中的样子看起来会很棒，随着舞曲扭动的你看着就像一个1984年的机器人！”在结束曲《A Certain Romance》中，乐队随着跳动的Ska-Punk节奏一直在重复着：“无论他们穿“Reebok”还是“Converse”，而重要的是there ain't no romance around there”。

　　从音乐上说，作为在绿洲（Oasis）和石玫瑰（The Stone Roses）影响之下成长起来的英国新一代乐队，Arctic Monkeys的音乐也是主要以吉他为主。本张专辑中的大多数歌曲都由“The Strokes式”的突出的吉他Riff和激进的Punk节奏串起的，《Fake Tales Of San Francisco》，《Red Light Indicates The Doors Are Secure》以及乐队的第二首英国榜冠军单曲《When The Sun Goes Down》都是这一类型的歌曲中比较突出的。

　　不过，已经成为“英国新一代代言人”的Arctic Monkeys能否打动美国以及其他国家的歌迷还真是个未知数，只是希望红的很快的他们不会凉的太快。
