Pianist Lang Lang Strikes the Right Notes
This young Chinese pianist is already an international success
His 2006 disc, "Memory," was his first solo effort made under studio conditions. Because Lang Lang is so electrifiedby audiences, it was widely assumed that most of his major recordings would be taken from live concerts. Now, he loves the studio process.
"You have more time to think about it, to make sure that what you're doing fits with the score," he says.
Pet projects
Not long ago, Lang Lang seemed to pursue his career with a puppy-like enthusiasm for any good idea thrown his way. But now that he's in a position to initiate projects he's personally interested in, he's doing so.
His UNICEF association means that he visits distressed communities and returns with a report. Well-known, oft-interviewed musicians such as Lang Lang can't help but bring wider public awareness to a given situation, such as malaria-stricken Tanzania.
"I spent two days there. It's a different world," he says. "We drove four hours ... to Mount Kilimanjaro, and finally arrived in the middle of nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. I went to be the village and there's a big sign: ‘Welcome Ambassador Lang Lang.' "
A new perspective
Seeing life from such a multinational perspective seems reflected in his recording career. His newest album, the likes of which no classical pianist has made before, is an all- Chinese disc titled "Dragon Songs."
"It's hard to convince people to do it; an entire Chinese thing," he says.
In years past, Lang Lang went out of his way to be Western, talking about his favorite movie (Gladiator) and his buddy Tiger Woods. With this album, he seems adamantly Chinese and was offended when a French journalist questioned the value of Chinese music in comparison to Western music.
"I wouldn't say he's totally wrong," Lang Lang says.
"Classical music is popular in Asia, but why isn't Chinese music popular outside Asia? I think Chinese music is sometimes too simple. But then, Mozart is simple."
