Cancer survival rates on rise
翻译原文:
Research from Cancer Council Victoria shows the overall five-year cancer survival rate was 61 per cent in 2004, up from 48 per cent in 1990.
However, country and regional Victorians (59 per cent) were less likely to beat their cancer than those living in Melbourne (62 per cent). Survival rates among men (58 per cent) were also lower than for women (64 per cent).
The council's chief executive, Professor David Hill, said the improvements were largely due to the better detection and medical research developments for specific cancers.
"The big movers among the common cancers have been prostate and breast cancer. Among the less common ones, survival rates have improved for things like non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, acute lymphatic leukaemia and colon cancer."
He said there was still a list of common but difficult cancers for which medical researchers had not been able to find answers, such as lung, pancreatic and ovarian cancers.
