SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea and the European Union on Sunday formally announced the launch of free trade talks, saying a successful agreement would both boost bilateral commerce and complement efforts to forge a global trade deal.

"The Korea-EU FTA will provide an excellent opportunity for Korea to become the East Asia FTA hub linking Europe, Asia and the United States," South Korean Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong said at a press conference with EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.

The two officials held talks earlier Sunday in which they formally agreed to launch the negotiations, which begin Monday in Seoul.

 Mandelson said that a deal will boost already substantial trade between the EU and South Korea. But he added that the key goal remains reaching a global trade deal in ongoing talks sponsored by the World Trade Organization.

"We rightly prioritize the Doha round because it will deliver trade benefits to Korea and the EU that no single bilateral trade agreement can match," Mandelson said.

He was referring to the Doha Development Round of negotiations, named after the Qatari capital where they were launched in 2001.
