The American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visits Moscow today for talks aimed at bridging a wide divide in a range of issues. Foremost among these, are the American-backed UN plan to allow Kosovo to become independent from Serbia, and Washington's proposed extension of a missile defense shield into eastern Europe. From Moscow, here’s James Rogers.

Condoleezza Rice arrived at Russia's capital, Moscow at a time when Washington and Moscow appeared to see eye-to-eye on fewer and fewer issues. Russia is bitterly opposed the US's plan to build the missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. Moscow has warned that the project presents a threat to world peace. American attempts to persuade them otherwise have so far failed. The issue is bound to be on the agenda during Condoleezza Rice's visit.
