"In Iraq, a rare moment of joy and unity thanks to a big win by Iraq's national soccer team, a victory over arch rival Saudi Arabia in a prestigious soccer tournament. CBS news correspondent Allen Pizzey is live in Baghdad with that story.”
"Allen, good morning to you."
"Good morning, Ross. You know, you probably had to spend time here to appreciate just how much that Asia Cup win meant to Iraqis. The burst of joy to the final whistle was outpouring
a release of tension, fear and despondency
to transcend the sectarian political divisions."
Iraqis poured into the streets, firing wildly in the air in defiance
of orders and requests not to do so. The scenes were repeated across the country. In the Kurdish North and in Najaf, the Shiite
heartland, they waved the Iraqi flag, chanted, wept and cheered for hours. And for once there was little to fear, apart from bullets coming back and down, which killed 4 people in Baghdad. Cars were banned to keep suicide bombers at bay.
How much the win means to Iraq was clear from the local media coverage. Even this morning it was being replayed over and over again on TV. It was the lead story in every newspaper. The headline on this one reads: The Green Zone Divides Iraq, the Green Soccer Field Unites Us. A reference to the area that houses the Iraqi government and the US embassy. It was the sentiment matched on the streets.
"The Iraqi players united the Iraqi people, "Rasheadl Jeamaly says, "while the politicians have done the opposite."
This will be as good as it gets for fans, however, the security situation in Iraq means there will be no team victory parade for the streets of Baghdad, it's too risky. Even the hero of the game, goal scorer and captain Younis Mahmoud says he can't go home after one of his best friends was arrested a year ago, and has not been heard from since. The team is truly representative of the nation, made up of Sunni, Shiite and Kurds and every player has lost someone dear to them in the violence here.
"That de facto they were ranked outsiders must make the Iraqi team's victory one of the most inspiring in sports history and while it's too much to expect that it can solve all of Iraq's problems. It has given a hope that at least all is not lost yet, Ross?"
"Allen Pizzey in Baghdad. Thank you very much."
