What's on your iPod?(2/2)
Listen to everthing from grammar tips to history lessons
---all on your mps players
Other education podcasts have also proved popular with podcast listeners. Grammar Girl, a weekly five-minute podcast on grammar, ranks in the top 20 on iTunes, has just won a Podcast Peer Award for best education podcast, and has been downloaded 3 million times since July 2006.
Holly Harris, 21, a creative writing student at Seattle Pacific University who listens to Grammar Girl every week, says, "The rules are changing, and Grammar Girl explains the different angles, the different standards, and that it's important to consult more than one handbook."
Hungry to learn
Christopher Witcombe, an art historian at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, is a video podcaster who produces the lively Art History in Just a Minute. So far he has done one on Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper (downloaded 20,000 times since December 2006) and one on Mona Lisa (downloaded 300 times in the first 30 minutes.) He says people are hungry to learn but find the usual sources "not terribly interesting.
"My aim is to make art history as fun and interesting as I find it," says Witcombe. Then there's Jason Pomerantz, a not-yet-published writer on Long Island, who is reading and discussing in a strong New York accent-Shakespeare's sonnets in his podcast, Shakespeare Sonnets Read by some Guy From New York.
He started last spring (podcasting during his lunch hour), and he's now read 48 of the 154 famously difficult poems.
"I read it, then talk about it line by line, what it means, then I read it again," Pomerantz says.
He estimates he gets about 1,000 listeners per episode from all over the English-speaking world. The response to his shtick is mixed. "Some day, ‘I never thought I could understand them, but now I really like them.' And some people are appalled."Which is fine with Pomerantz, as long as they're still listening?
