15 former associates of Saddam Hussein have gone on trial in Iraq, accused of crimes against humanity for their alleged role in the suppression of a Shiite uprising in 1991. The defendants include Ali Hassan al-Majid, the cousin of Saddam Hussein and widely known as "Chemical Ali". He’s already been sentenced to death for crimes against the Kurds. Mike Wooldridge reports from Baghdad.

“Around 90 witnesses are expected to testify in what look set to be another lengthy trial. There’s no precise figure for the number killed in the crushing of the short live Shiite uprising but it’s widely estimated to be in the tens of thousands. The uprising started days after the US-led alliance had driven Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait. The trial will deal with crimes against humanity allegedly committed by Iraqi military leaders and leaders of the ruling Baath party in putting down the rebellions and in the punishment of suspected supporters of the uprising.”
