[彭蒙惠英语] 持续运动,但要用聪明的方法(1/2)
Keep On Exercising, But Be Smart (1/2)
Staying active is great, but older folks need to adjust --- and quit hurting themselves
Perhaps "The Terminator" should switch to Pilates. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has set the standard for fitness while occupying the California Governor's Office, also has had some high-profile injuries.
On December 23, 2006, a ski mishap left him with a fractured femur that had to be surgically repaired. Earlier that year, a motorcycle accident left him with a fat lip, 15 stitches and a bruised ego.
A widespread problem
It seems that Arnold, still buff at age 59, is suffering from a plethora of problems that affects athletes of American's baby boom generation. They are now well past 40 but insist on playing like they are in their 20s.
"I see a lot of boomers with athletic injuries," said sports medicine doctor Meredith Bean. Some are former athletes suffering from the long-term efforts of overusing their muscles and joints she said. Others are aging athletes who think they should still be able to play the way they did in high school.
But exercise is still good for you
However, the benefits of fitness in middle age "far outweigh the risks" of suffering an injury, said Bean, who is 35 and enjoys mountain biking, skiing and running. "The good news is that anyone of any age who is planning on participating in athletic activities can do some conditioning to decrease their risks [of injuries]."
You could try classes like Pilates, now available on video and in gyms. Such training can be a good way to prepare the core muscles (in the center of the body) for intense exercise.
Tips for exercising safely
If you are 40 or older, consider these tips as you begin.
Take time to warm up and stretch. Research has shown that cold muscles are more prone to injury. Ride a stationary bicycle, or run or walk in place for about five minutes. Then gently stretch your leg muscles, holding each stretch for 30 seconds.
