The European Union's second-highest court has appealed a record fine of nearly $700m imposed on Microsoft for abusing its market dominance. The court agreed with the European Commission that Microsoft was restricting consumer choice by including its own video and music playing technology in the basic Windows operating system used by 95% of the world's personal computers. This was a battle in which both sides had a huge amount to lose and it would change the way that the Microsoft conducted business worldwide. The ruling by Europe's second-highest court means the US software giant will be forced to release secret computer code to its rivals that they say is necessary in order for their products to work properly with the Windows operating system. It'll also have huge implications for the programs which automatically included with the Windows operating system as a key aspect to the case with whether Microsoft should be allowed to include programs called Windows Media Player which allowed PC users to play music and video on their computers. Rivals said it was a separate program and its inclusion with Windows effectively put all makers of rival media players out of business.
