S. California wildfires force thousands to flee homes

IRVINE, Calif. — More than a dozen wildfires, whipped by strong desert winds, raged Monday in a region stretching from north of Los Angeles to the Mexican border. At least one person has been killed and 250,000 people were ordered evacuated from the San Diego area.
A pair of wildfires consumed 128 homes in the mountain resort area of Lake Arrowhead, in the San Bernardino National Forest east of Los Angeles.
"It is a tragic time for California," said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who declared a state of emergency in seven counties. "It's dry all over California, wind all over. The conditions are really terrible."
