As expected, Kosovo's parliament has voted in favour of independence from Serbia. The declaration, read by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, announced that Kosovo was "an independent and sovereign state". After the independence vote, Kosovan MPs adopted a number of state symbols including a flag and anthem. In his address to parliament, Prime Minister Thaci said Kosovo would be "a state for all with equal rights". He also said that Kosovo would seek to join the European Union. Tens of thousands of people had gathered outside parliament in the capital Pristina to listen to the declaration and to celebrate their long-awaited independence.

Kosovo's ethnic Albanians have been demanding independence for some time. Lengthy negotiations between Kosovo's leaders and Belgrade failed to produce an agreement. The international community is also divided over independence for the former Yugoslavian republic. Belgrade, which considers Kosovo as the cradle of Serbian culture and religion, is vehemently opposed to independence for the republic. Moscow supports Belgrade's position but the United States has announced its support for Pristina.
