A last ditch effort by SAG to keep the negotiations alive between it and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers has been shuttered by sister union AFTRA, which refused to postpone for a third time its scheduled talks with the producers.

In a statement, AFTRA said, "Today, SAG asked us to postpone our negotiations with the AMPTP so they could continue their talks, as well as to potentially collaborate on the primetime television negotiations. The AFTRA Primetime Negotiating Committee thoughtfully considered these requests but respectfully declined. We believe it is in the best interests of our members, and our legal obligation, to proceed with our independent negotiations with the AMPTP."

SAG and the AMPTP broke off talks Tuesday night after 18 days of formal negotiations, which resulted in no deal and sources saying they are far apart on the issues.

The actors contract expires June 30.
