They hoped the firemen would arrive_______.

A. in time 　　　B. on time

我们来看看这两种说法有什么不同。

上图：They hoped the firemen would arrive on time.

注：电话亭里的人说的是：Hello, fire brigade? Oh, good, could you please come at exactly 9:25 tonight? Ok, see you then.

If you do something on time, you do it punctually, at exactly the time that was arranged before. 所以，如果你想让消防员on time到你家，那么你要做的就像上期下面那张图片一样，你要事先预约一下，然后说“could you please come at exactly 9:25 tonight?”的确很让人捧腹。

所以，答案就是in time，表示early enough，也就是及时啦。
